TCIU is named for the late Rabbi Marc H. Tanenbaum (d. 1992). Called the Human Rights Rabbi, he was dedicated to helping all people recognise the humanity of the other. Mixing scholarship and activism, he launched programs of interreligious education and dialogue. To honour his work, his widow, Dr. Georgette Bennett, founded TCIU in 1992.
